Medical science has failed to identify any structure in the human body that performs the functions of the subconscious mind. It is really an hypothesis that there is something called the subconscious mind, because it is obvious that body functions like heartbeat, respiration and digestion do not depend on the conscious mind. Otherwise you'd die if you forgot to breathe.
Furthermore, science has no convincing explanation for dreaming, let alone the more esoteric abilities that are ascribed to the subconscious mind. Still, we know that dreaming happens. It has been scientifically proven that hypnosis reduces the pain associated with medical procedures, and yet science does not have a convincing mechanism for how that happens either.
If you have ever seen movies like
“The Secret” or “What the Bleep do we know”, you
will recall that biologists explained that every cell of the human body
contains receptors for thousands of different hormones and
neurotransmitters, and furthermore, that your thoughts affect the
endocrine system that generates those hormones. (see whatthebleep ) You could say that your
subconscious mind runs the whole show. The whole biochemical system that
you call your body. Deepak Chopra has said much the same thing in his
books (see deepakchopra
)
When you read the literature on hypnosis and the subconscious mind, it is clear that hypnosis is like a programming language for the subconscious mind. So if you like, the subconscious mind is like a very sophisticated computer. Like all computers, it has no sense of humour and slavishly does what it is told to do by the programs. So, if you're like me, you'll want to make sure your programs don't have any bugs. What would a bug in the programming of the subconscious mind be like?? Well, I'll tell you. If it's a bug in the psychological level, you'd see a neurosis or a psychosis. You know there is so much craziness in the world now, we see it every day. If it's a bug at the physical level, we would see all kinds of disease and disability in the world too. And sure enough, we see that everywhere too.
Fortunately, you now have access to tools to debug your programming. It's called hypnosis.
